Zumba Injuries And Prevention
July 13, 2015A recent US study reported that one in four Zumba participants sustained injuries. Dr Chin Pak Lin says that Zumba injuries has also been on the rise over the past years in Singapore. The most common Zumba injuries occur in the knees, feet and ankles. These injuries can be treated with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) therapy or knee surgery reconstruction depending on severity.
Six Rules To Stay Safe From Zumba Injuries
- Choose an appropriate level for your Zumba class.
- Wear the right shoes and consider investing in dance shoes that support multi-directional movements.
- Dance on proper ground with flooring that lets you move easily and is shock-absorbent, such as the dance studio or gym.
- Avoid crowded classes where you can’t move freely without stepping on someone’s foot and the instructor is too busy to particularly take note of your mistakes.
- Keep to three classes a week as the likelihood of you getting injured increases with excessive repetition of movements.
- Warm up and cool down properly to loosen your muscles and lower your risk of injuries.
