In an interview with Lianhe Wanbao, Dr David Su talks about the causes and treatment of splay foot, such as tendon transfer surgery.
Splay foot is commonly developed from flat floot. People with splayed foot may have difficulty walking well and often appear clumsy when walking. Flat foot happens when the arch of the foot collapses and causes the toes to naturally turn outwards.
To correct splay foot and flat foot, there are arch supports available to help support the foot arch and stabilise the ankle. There are also surgeries available (Gastrocnemius Recession, Subtalar Joint Arthroereisis and Tendon Transfer) to treat splay foot and flat foot if it is causing severe pain and discomfort.
