Otorhinolaryngology / ENT

Dr Soon Sue Rene

More about Dr Soon:

Dr Soon Sue Rene is a senior Ear Nose Throat (ENT) Surgeon, with subspeciality interest in snoring/obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), pediatric ENT and sinus surgery.  Prior to joining AHS as Head of Division of Otorhinolaryngology, she was an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), Jurong Community Hospital, Jurong Medical Centre, and was a Visiting Consultant to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Dr Soon obtained her basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore and completed her ENT specialist training in Singapore.  She subsequently underwent clinical fellowship training in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the University of Alberta, Stollery Children’s Hospital, and in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Surgery at the G.B. Morgagni-L. Pierantoni Hospital Italy, under the Human Manpower Development Plan scholarship from the Ministry of Health.

Dr Soon is a strong advocate that the management of obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children lies in a holistic approach which encompasses management of weight, control of nasal allergies and reflux, positive airway pressure therapy if the patient can tolerate, and surgery only in selected patients. She set up the NTFGH Sleep Surgery Service, ENT-OMS joint clinic, and was instrumental in integrating surgical care as part of the Sleep Multidisciplinary Team. She is well known for her Minimally Invasive Snoring, OSA surgical techniques, which are safe and offer quick recovery, and is a regular international and local teaching faculty to fellow surgeons.

With her training and vast experience, Dr Soon is well versed in managing ENT conditions which can potentially obstruct the upper airway in adults and children (nasal allergies, sinus, deviated septum, adeno-tonsillar/turbinate hypertrophy, larynx and thyroid). She hopes to increase awareness of OSA in adults and children as the condition is associated with multiple medical problems in adults, can lead to behavioural issues in children, and is increasing in prevalence throughout the world.
